"Clouds for Sensors and Data Intensive Applications"

We describe a sensor cloud architecture to provide a coordinating framework as the Internet of Things explodes around us. Applications to robotics, military and science data analysis are given. We point out the special features of areas like Earthquake science where the cloud architecture promotes needed citizen involvement during catastrophes. We show how sensor clouds fit in a general architecture of clouds for scientific data analysis centered on MapReduce and its extensions. Measurements are made on the FutureGrid testbed. We present challenges in area of response time (latency) and the broad development of a scientific programming environment on the cloud.
